Chief of General Staff of Malagasy Armed Forces Welcomed Aboard EU NAVFOR Italian Warship ITS Espero
June 10, 2017 - 10:02During EU NAVFOR counter-piracy patrols in the southern Indian Ocean, the commanding officer of ITS Espero, Commander Luigi Pirozzi, took the took the opportunity to visit the port of Antsiranana in Madagascar to strengthen ties with a key ally in the fight against piracy.
Once alongside, the Chief of General Staff of the Malagasy Armed forces, Lieutenant General Razsfindraketo Lantoaringaka, came aboard to see firsthand the capabilities and professionalism of the Italian warship. During the visit Lieutenant General Lantoaringaka was also introduced to members of the ship’s company and he was briefed on their efforts to deter piracy and provide reassurance to seafarers as they transit across the region.
ITS Espero sailors also trained members of the Malagasy Navy in ‘search and secure’ techniques at sea and the training was an excellent opportunity to work alongside local maritime forces, share experiences and strengthen maritime capabilities.
