EU NAVFOR continued cooperation with OmanJune 29, 2018 - 10:08
The commitment and cooperation of partners remains important to ensure maritime security in the region and ongoing high level meetings provides a platform for common understanding and further developments.
During one such engagement, the Force Commander of EU NAVFOR’s Operation Atalanta met with the Minister of State and Governor of Dhofar this week to continue the cooperation and partnership following a joint exercise between EU NAVFOR and the Royal Navy of Oman in April.
Rear Admiral Simone Malvagna, Captain Guiseppe Lai and H.E. Marco Schifano, Italian Assistant Military Attaché to Oman, were received by the Governor of Dhofar, H.E. Sayyid Mohammed bin Sultan bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, during a port visit of EU NAVFOR Italian flagship ITS Carlo Margottini to Muscat.
Admiral Malvagna discussed issues relating to maritime security in the region with Colonel Al Wahedi, the deputy commander of the Omani Coast Guard. He encouraged the efforts being carried out by countries neighbouring the Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin to counter the threat posed by piracy to Merchant Vessels.
The Force Commander applauded the Government of the Oman, under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, in fostering the spirit of cooperation with other nations. Cooperation and joint activities, such as the training exercise conducted in Salalah in April are important in maintaining maritime security and allowing the free-flow of international trade through important shipping lanes.
ITS Carlo Margottini continues her six month deployment in the Western Indian Ocean as part of Operation Atalanta, keeping merchant shipping safe and deterring piracy in the region.
