EU Naval Force Meets With EUCAP Nestor In DjiboutiNovember 1, 2012 - 16:10
On 31 October, the Force Commander of the EU Naval Force Somalia – Operation Atalanta (EU NAVFOR), Rear Admiral Enrico Credendino, met Jacques Launay, Head of EUCAP Nestor, the European Union mission on Regional Maritime Capacity Building in the Horn of Africa.
With this meeting, EUCAP Nestor and EU NAVFOR formally acknowledge the start of their active co-operation. Both missions are part of the EU’s comprehensive approach to Somalia; EU NAVFOR is tackling piracy by deterrence, prevention and repression, and EUCAP Nestor is contributing to a sustainable and long-term solution to piracy through supporting the development of maritime capacity of some countries in the region.
EUCAP Nestor is a civilian mission aimed at strengthening the Rule of Law in Somalia, with an initial focus on the regions of Puntland and Somaliland, and developing the maritime capacities of Djibouti, Kenya, and the Seychelles.
During the stay in Djibouti, the EU NAVFOR Force Commander also met with the recently appointed Head of the EU Delegation in Djibouti, Mr Joseph Silva, where they shared their views on the state of play of EU NAVFOR Operation Atalanta in countering piracy in the region.
