EU NAVFOR Force Commander visits Task Force warships at sea
September 11, 2010 - 17:34On 9 and 11 September, Force Commander Rear-Admiral Philippe Coindreau visited at sea EU NAVFOR Spanish amphibious ship ESP GALICIA and EU NAVFOR French frigate FS FLORÉAL.
The Force Commander had the opportunity to be briefed on the two warships capabilities and to meet the crews.
On board the two Task Force ships, Rear-Admiral Philippe Coindreau praised operational capabilities of both ships, as well as ESP GALICIA’s medical facilities. “These two warships are key assets of our Task Force and will enable us to better fight against piracy”.
EU NAVFOR Flagship FS DE GRASSE, ESP GALICIA and FS FLORÉAL were all patrolling off the East coast of Somalia.
EU NAVFOR Somalia – Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Program (WFP) and vessels of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). EU NAVFOR also protects vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, deters and disrupts piracy. EU NAVFOR finally monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
