Hijacked ELENI P arrives off the coast of Somalia
May 18, 2010 - 19:14EU NAVFOR can confirm that the hijacked Liberian flagged ELENI P has now arrived off the coast of Somalia and is anchored in the vicinity of Garacad.
The Liberian flagged, Eleni P, was reported to have been hijacked 250 nautical miles off the coast of Oman on the morning of 12 May. The bulk carrier with dead weight of 72,119 and a crew of 26 (23 Filipinos, 2 Romanian and 1 Indian) was on route to Kandla in India when taken by pirates. EU NAVFOR will continue to monitor the situation.
EU NAVFOR Somalia – Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Programme (WFP) and vessels of African Union Mission in Somalia, AMISOM and to protect vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean and to deter and disrupt piracy. EU NAVFOR also monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
