During a recent counter-piracy patrol off the coast of Somalia, Operation Atalanta flagship, ESPS Galicia, conducted a Replenishment At Sea (RAS) with French Navy ship, FS Var. A RAS is a highly-specialized manoeuvre that is carried out by highly-skilled teams on board both ships. During the RAS, the ships sail very close to each other to enable fuel to be passed via hoses.
The meeting at sea between ESPS Galicia and FS Far provided the Force Commander, Rear Admiral Gómez Fernández de Córdoba, with an opportunity to visit FS Var. He was hosted on board by the CTF 150 commander, Captain Crignola. Both commanders agreed that collaboration between coalition forces in the Gulf of Aden is critical in order to improve maritime security in the region.
On completion of the RAS, both ships continued their counter-piracy roles.
