Italian Sailors Deployed with Operation Atalanta Train with Tanzanian Navy
April 27, 2016 - 08:35During a recent port visit to Dar Es Salaam, Operation Atalanta’s Italian warship, ITS Euro, conducted a series of naval exercises with men and women from the Tanzanian Navy.
Over the course of three days, the Italian sailors trained alongside their Tanzanian counterparts, practising a range of skills, including the classification and defusing of maritime-borne explosives and boarding operations.
On the final day the sailors carried out whole-ship training, such as simulated fire-fighting and flooding repairs at sea.
ITS Euro’s commanding officer welcomed the Tanzanian sailors on board ITS Euro as they were enthusiastic and eager to learn throughout the training.
Conducting training with regional partners is a vital part of Operation Atalanta’s work. By helping local maritime forces to strengthen their own maritime capabilities will in turn help region states to better deter and disrupt any acts of piracy in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden.
