EU NAVFOR WELCOMES BACK REPUBLIC OF KOREA

Dec 05, 2017 - 17:01
The Korean warship, ROKS Chungmugong, has recently deployed off the coast of Somalia as part of EU NAVFOR.  This cooperation between the Republic of Korea and European Union warships is helping to strengthen maritime security and keep seafarers safe as they transit the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden.

ROKS Chungmugong is the lead ship in its Yi Sun-sin class of destroyer.  It comes equipped with the latest military and surveillance technology, and so is perfectly suited to counter-piracy operations.

On meeting EU NAVFOR, the sailors from both ships ‘cross-decked’ to each other’s ships and took part in training exercises on board.  Counter-piracy tactics and the importance of naval cooperation to help deter armed pirate attacks at sea were the main points of discussion, including how to integrate communications between vessels.

This is the fourth time that the Republic of Korea and European Union Naval Force ships have worked together this year on counter-piracy operations.  These relationships and capabilities are now being very closely aligned.
