The Serbian Maritime Protection Team, which is currently deployed in the Indian Ocean as part of Operation Atalanta, is continuing its protection of World Food Programme (WFP) vessel, MSM Douro, from potential pirate attack.

The highly-trained and specialized Serbian contingent, which will be embarked in MV MSM Douro until August, is ensuring that much-needed food aid arrives safely into Somali ports, before it is distributed to the Somali people.

As well as providing security for the vessel, the team also provides advice to the master and crew about self-protection measures to counter a pirate attack.

Speaking about the deployment, the commanding officer of the Serbian team, Mladen Stamenkovic stated “In-depth training prior to our deployment provided us with the knowledge and self-confidence to carry out this important mission.  I am extremely proud of my Serbian crew for their hard work and commitment to the European Union’s counter-piracy mission.”
