On 6th June EU NAVFOR’s Deputy Commander Rear Admiral Nanclares visited Montenegro and was welcomed by Chief of General Staff, Brigadier General Ilija Daković.

Montenegro military forces have been an integral component of Operation Atalanta since 2010, when their military forces first deployed to the Headquarters in London. Later in 2013 Montenegrin forces began to protect World Food Programme (WFP) vessels with embarked troops. WFP vessels provide vital aid to the people of Somalia 365 days a year and having the Montenegro military fully integrated into Operation Atalanta, provides the maritime protection that these aid ships need against the real threat of piracy and armed robbery.

The General stated; “As long as the Operation is engaged, you can rest assured that we will continue to send our best people to support mission objectives for as long as necessary”. Admiral Nanclares thanked the General and the Montenegro military for their professionalism, commitment and enduring support to Operation Atalanta.

EU NAVFOR remains at the centre of a complex network of counter-piracy effort off the Horn of Africa. Through Operation Atalanta, EU NAVFOR coordinates supports and partners many organisations, independent deployers and regional stakeholders to ensure the freedom of navigation and security throughout the Area.
