EUCAP Nestor, EU Naval Force, and the Seychelles Coast Guard carried out a joint counter-piracy exercise in the Seychelles on 26 April.

Training support to help boost the Horn of Africa regional states’ maritime security and counter piracy capabilities is very much part of the European Union’s counter piracy mission - Operation Atalanta.

Participation in the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Operation Atalanta, off the coast of Somalia, is not without risk. When operating far away from hospitals and other necessary resources, the ships in the operation need to rely on the medical competence at sea.

Having joined the EU Naval Force just over a week ago, the crew from Swedish Ocean Patrol Vessel HSwMS Carlskrona has been busy conducting counter piracy patrols.

Yesterday morning, whilst sailing along the northern coast of Somalia, the Spanish frigate ESPS Numancia, deployed with the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia Operation Atalanta, performed a friendly approach on a Yemeni dhow to help promote understanding about EU NAV

ESPS Numancia joined the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia Operation Atalanta on Saturday 6 April.  The Spanish frigate belongs to the 41st Escort Squadron and this is the second time that she has deployed as part of Atalanta.

On Saturday 6 April Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte visited frigate HNLMS De Ruyter which is currently deployed with the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia Operation Atalanta off the coast of Somalia.

The Portuguese Frigate NRP Álvares Cabral joined the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia – Operation Atalanta on 6 April 2013, in Djibouti.

On 6 April 2013, Commodore Jorge Palma (Portuguese Navy) took over as Force Commander of the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia Operation Atalanta from Rear Admiral Pedro Garcia De Paredes (Spanish Navy), following a change-of-command-ceremony in Djibouti.
