A Naval Cooperation and Guidance for Shipping (NCAGS) officer has been deployed on board the EU NAVFOR flagship since the operation was launched in December 2008, providing vital help and advice to masters of merchant vessels as they transit the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean.
Commander Olivier Trullemans from the Belgian Navy has been deployed with ESPS Galicia for the past nine months and been the link between Operation Atalanta and the merchant community. During a recent port visit to the Seychelles he handed over the key role to Lieutenant Bart Van Reybrouck, also from the Belgium Navy.
The Belgium Navy has been providing NCAGS support on board EU NAVFOR flagships and in the Operational Headquarters in Northwood, UK, for the past nine years.
Speaking about his time deployed with ESPS Galicia, Commander Trullemans said “My time spent on board ESPS Galicia as a member of the EU NAVFOR staff has been an unforgettable experience in my naval career. I would like to express my gratitude to all the crew of ESPS Galicia for their hard work and hospitality and wish them continued counter-piracy success and a safe return home later this year. I would also like to express my good wishes to Lieutenant Van Reybrouck.”
