Operation Atalanta Ship HNLMS Groningen Conducts Her First Friendly Approach
September 14, 2015 - 10:15On Friday 11 September 2015, Dutch Navy warship, HNLMS Groningen, carried out her first friendly approach (FA) with local Somali fishermen since she joined Operation Atalanta at the end of August.
The warship was conducting counter-piracy patrols along the Somali coast as part of the European Union’s efforts to help make the waters in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden safer from pirate attack. After seeing the local seafarers, the Dutch sailors took the opportunity to meet and talk to them about concerns that they have and the role of the EU Naval Force in the area.
HNLMS Groningen’s commanding officer stated afterwards: “As the weather improves it is likely that we will have the opportunity to meet more local fishermen and seafarers. It is important that we understand their concerns and highlight how we are helping to keep the seas safer for all. My crew are fully trained and are looking forward to the coming months.”
