Spanish F/V FENDS off pirate attack
March 8, 2010 - 18:17Early this morning an EU NAVFOR Spanish Maritime Patrol Aircraft from Djibout patrolling the Somali Basin received a distress call from Spanish F/V INTERTUNA 2 reporting that she was under attack by 4 skiffs.
The MPA closed the position to render support, reporting the incident to EU NAVFOR units in the area.
INTERTUNA 2 repelled the attack by firing warning shots from the Vessel Protection Detachment (VPD) onboard and the pirates broke off their attack. EU NAVFOR is monitoring the situation.
EU NAVFOR Somalia – Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the ‘World Food Program’ (WFP) and vessels of AMISOM, and to protect vulnerable ships in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean and to deter and disrupt piracy. EU NAVFOR also monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia
