On Sunday 17th September 2017, Dutch Navy warship, HNLMS Rotterdam, carried out her first friendly approach with local Somali fishermen since she joined Operation Atalanta.
The warship was conducting counter-piracy patrols along the Somali coast as part of the European Union’s efforts to help make the waters in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden safer from pirate attack. After seeing the local seafarers, the Dutch sailors took the opportunity to meet and talk to them about concerns that they have and the role of the EU Naval Force in the area.
HNLMS Rotterdam’s commanding officer stated afterwards: “As we head into the inter-monsoon period, it is likely that we will have the opportunity to meet more Somali fishermen. It is important that we understand their concerns and highlight how we are helping to keep the seas safer for all. My crew are fully trained and are looking forward continuing EU NAVFOR's mission.”
