The EU Naval Force’s counter-piracy mission, Operation Atalanta, is currently supported by two German Navy ships; one is the flagship, FGS Bayern, and the other is a tanker, FGS Spessart.

Operation Atalanta’s German flagship, FGS Bayern, recently spent time alongside in the port of Muscat in Oman.  During the visit, the Force Commander, Rear Admiral Kaack, was invited to spend time with the Royal Navy of Oman.

Operation Atalanta’s current German Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) detachment has been deployed in Djibouti for the past three months.

On Sunday 22 May 2016 the crew of the current, and indeed 46th Spanish Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) ‘Orion’ Detachment  based in Djibouti, completed a two-month tour off the coast of Somalia.  

During their recent port visit to Tanzania, Operation Atalanta sailors gathered together with the Mayor of Dar Es Salaam to remember those who gave their lives during the First World War.

Lining up side by side with Operation Atalanta sailors and marines, on 16th of May members of the Tanzanian Navy were welcomed on board FGS Bayern for a day of maritime training.
