On the 27th of December MV FIDEL, UN World Food Program chartered vessel, met EU NAVFOR warship FS COMMANDANT L’HERMINIER in the Gulf of Aden, just south of Bab-al-Mandeb, and was escorted Berbera city, in the northern coast of Somalia.

While M/V Fidel proceeded at a slow pace towards her destination under close protection from the EUNAVFOR corvette, a maritime patrol aircraft reinforced the military presence, as well as performing its surveillance along the International Recommended Transit Corridor and the Somalia north coast.

The following day, December 28th, the WFP vessel safely entered the port of Berber and EU NAVFOR warship COMMANDANT L'HERMINIER resumed her other anti piracy patrol.

The main tasks of EU NAVFOR mission Operation ATALANTA are to escort merchant vessels carrying food of the ‘World Food Program’ (WFP), the protection of vulnerable ships in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean and to deter and disrupt piracy.
