In November 2010, Estonia became the 26th nation to participate in EU NAVFOR when a Vessel Protection Detachment (VPD) embarked on the EU NAVFOR German destroyer FGS HAMBURG .

After an agreement between France and Estonia, a second Estonian Navy detachment has now deployed for six months on board the French frigate NIVÔSE which is currently taking part in Operation ATALANTA.

After four months of specialised training in Estonia, the VPD personnel completed an additional period of joint training with French Navy Forces at L’Orient before deploying on the operation. This additional training comprised of fast roping, sea survival, weapon drills and rules of engagement (ROE) exercises.

The Estonian Vessel Protection Detachment (VPD) comprises of ten troops, including one officer.  They are able to conduct boarding missions of suspected pirate boats as well as to deploy onto World Food Program vessels whilst being escorted by EU NAVFOR.
