On 10 October 2010, the crew of the EU NAVFOR Italian ship ITS LIBECCIO, visited the "Bee Hive Children's orphanage" during its port visit in Mombasa harbour (Kenya).
Ship’s crew with specific technical skills assisted in helping with maintenance and minor repairs to the orphanage’s home.
Every occasion that EU NAVFOR ships crewmembers meet the local population during a port visit, is considered an ideal opportunity to improve the people’s awareness of EU NAVFOR missions and activities at sea.
EU NAVFOR Somalia – Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Program (WFP) and vessels of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). EU NAVFOR also protects vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, deters and disrupts piracy. EU NAVFOR finally monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
