EU NAVFOR welcomes Spanish amphibious ship GALICIA

On 1st of September, the Spanish amphibious ship SPS GALICIA joined EU NAVFOR Task Force 465 off the Horn of Africa.

SPS GALICIA is a modern Landing Platform Dock (LPD), commissioned in 1998, with a displacement of 13,800 tons and length of 160 meters equipped with two helicopters and capable of accomplishing a wide variety of tasks with considerable operational flexibility and enhanced effectiveness within the Operation ATALANTA mission, as she demonstrated during her first deployment last year. The Commanding Officer Captain Juan A. Cornago Diufain is supported by a crew of 126 Officers and sailors and will be operating in the region for the next three months.

EUNAVFOR Somalia – Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort ships carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Program (WFP) and vessels of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), deter and disrupt piracy and protect other vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. In addition, EUNAVFOR monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
