On Tuesday 1st September 2015, Spanish warship, ESPS Meteoro, joined Operation Atalanta off the Coast of Somalia for the second time.
ESPS Meteoro left her home port of Las Palmas in the Canary Islands at the beginning of August to start her three month deployment with the EU’s counter-piracy operation.
Under the command of Lieutenant Commander José Almira, ESPS Meteoro will conduct counter-piracy patrols and protect World Food Programmes (WFP) vessels delivering humanitarian aid to Somali People.
Since 2009 EU warships and maritime protection teams from Operation Atalanta have protected over 335 WFP vessels along the Somali coast.
