During the afternoon of 20 January, the bulk carrier MV KHALED MUHIEDDINE K and the chemical tanker MV BUNGA LAUREL were pirated in the North Arabian Sea.
The MV KHALED MUHIEDDINE K is Togo flagged and Syrian owned and has a deadweight of 24,022 tonnes. The vessel, with a crew of 25 (22 Syrian and 3 Egyptian), had registered with the appropriate authorities and was on passage from Singapore to Hodeida, in Yemen.
The MV BUNGA LAUREL is Panama flagged and Malaysian owned. Details of her crew or her route are not known. The vessel was not registered with MSCHOA and was not reporting to UKMTO.
The condition of the crews is not known at this stage.
The MV KHALED MUHIEDDINE K was taken approximately 330 nautical miles South East of the Omani coastal port of Salalah while the MV BUNGA LAUREL was taken 260 miles East of the the Omani island of Masirah. Few details of either attack are known at this time but the master of the MV KHALED MUHIEDDINE K reported being fired upon with small arms and seeing pirates on board before all contact with the vessel was lost. There are no details of the attack on the other vessel
