The EU NAVFOR local liaison officer based in Mogadishu has changed over. Commander Russ Nash RN has come to the end of his deployment in Mogadishu, one of his highlights being the support he enabled from EU NAVFOR ships to medical personnel following the October 2017 bombings.
EU NAVFOR provided medical assistance to Mogadishu following the terrorist bombings on 14th October, resulting in a large number of casualties in desperate need of medical assistance. Commander Nash provided great support by coordinating the delivery of specialist medical stores and personnel from the ships.
EU NAVFOR Warship ESPS Rayo was able to deliver medical stores and equipment shortly after the incident. EU NAVFOR Warship HNLMS Rotterdam then provided the UN hospital in Mogadishu with urgently needed medical specialists in order to care for victims of the attack. Medical personnel and equipment were brought to the hospital with the help of AMISOM Forces.
Russ Nash is replaced by Commander Steve Elliot RN. He has spent nine months in the capital of Somalia during what has been a very busy period. As part of the handover they visited Mr Ahmed M. Mohamud who works in the Port of Mogadishu, thus business as usual in the day job was maintained during this period of change.
One of EU NAVFOR’s mandated tasks is to assist the other EU missions based in Somalia, namely the EU Training Mission and the EUCap Somalia, and liaison work is vital in this ongoing work.
