On 4 September, during its port visit in Salalah, a joint group made up of an Italian, Croatian and a Djiboutian officer from the EU NAVFOR Italian ship ITS LIBECCIO, visited Omani and Pakistani vessels in the port of Salalah (Oman).
The purpose of these visits was to develop contact with the local seafarer community and to promote the application of Best Management Practices amongst vulnerable vessels.
The presence of an Arabic-speaking Djiboutian Navy officer was very useful, as many masters and crew were unable to speak English. His skills in Arabic made it possible for EU NAVFOR to deliver clear information and explanations, thus improving the dissemination of Best Management Practices and developing security awareness to the seafarers sailing in the area. Discussions were also conducted in Arabic language with crew of the fishing vessels.
In addition to the obvious language asset, Djiboutian Navy officers working in collaboration with EU NAVFOR also deliver cultural advises on board EU NAVFOR warships and during port visits. They enable the Task Force to develop mutual understanding and knowledge with the local fishing and merchant community.
