ESPS Rayo Welcomes Tanzanian Armed Forces

Oct 30, 2017 - 08:58
EU NAVFOR Spanish Warship ESPS Rayo welcomed onboard 38 members of the Tanzanian Navy and Law Enforcement Detachments.

The three day port visit to Dar Es Salaam enabled the Spanish crew to work with Tanzanian maritime forces to enhance security capability. Hands on practical work backed up with theoretical presentations allowed the local forces to expand their skills and knowledge across a number of areas.

The Tanzanian Armed Forces participated in sea survival exercises, approach and boarding procedures, basic first aid as well as search, rescue and damage control. Port visits by EU Naval Forces  contribute to building a stronger regional maritime security capacity, and specifically in counter-piracy awareness.

In addition, the Commanding Officer of ESPS Rayo, Lieutenant Commander Rafael Naranjo hosted the Spanish Ambassador to Tanzania, Félix Costales Artieda, and the EU Ambassador to Tanzania, Roeland Van de Geer onboard. They were impressed at the capabilities of ESPS Rayo in deterring and suppressing piracy off the coast of Somalia and across the Western Indian Ocean.
