EU Naval Force and Tanzania People’s Defence Force Reinforce Importance of Cooperation and Vigilance to Deter Pirate Attacks in Indian Ocean

On Monday 10 April 2017 Operation Atalanta’s force commander, Rear Admiral Rafael Fernández-Pintado Muñoz-Rojas, visited the Tanzania People’s Defence Force chief of staff, Lieutenant General James Mwakibolwa, during a port visit to Dar Es Salaam.

During his visit the force commander was introduced to the generals who head up the intelligence, planning and training departments.  The deputy naval commander, Captain Michael Mumanga also participated in the meeting.

After being welcomed to the Defence Force’s Joint Operational Command Centre, Rear Admiral Rafael Fernández-Pintado Muñoz-Rojas provided an update on the recent piracy incidents at sea off the coast of Somalia and the EU Naval Force’s role to deter attacks against ships, including the vessels of the World Food Programme (WFP) that carry humanitarian aid to Somalia

The force commander expressed his thanks to Lieutenant General Mwakibolwa for taking the time to meet him and his staff and both commanders agreed the need for continued vigilance and cooperation to help ensure that vessels remain safe from attack as they transit key shipping routes in the Indian Ocean.
