On Monday 27 July 2015, EU Naval Force flagship, ESPS Galicia, escorted a World Food Programme (WFP) vessel, Liberty Glory, along the Somali coast to protect it from any potential pirate attack.

ESPS Galicia escorted Liberty Glory from Djibouti to the port of Berbera in Somalia.  The journey covered 130 nautical miles.  Since 2009 EU warships and maritime protection teams from Operation Atalanta have protected over 335 WFP vessels carrying humanitarian aid along the Somali coast.

The Commanding Officer of ESPS Galicia, Captain Rafael Fernández-Pintado Muñoz-Rojas said: “I am pleased that the protection was successful and the much-needed food can now be given to the Somali people. Providing reassurance to the WFP crews  transporting humanitarian aid is a main task for the EU Naval Force.”
