Understanding the local maritime security situation and gaining valuable information remains important for EU NAVFOR. This knowledge can be gained by friendly interaction with fishermen off the coast of Somalia.

Recently EU NAVFOR Warship ESPS Meteoro conducted a Friendly Approach near Bosaso whilst on EU counter-piracy patrols along the Somali coastline. This was a friendly interaction with local seafarers and this is often conducted by EU NAVFOR warships.

During the interaction, the team from ESPS Meteoro spoke to local Somali fishermen about the piracy situation off the coast and concerns that they had; as well as obtain first-hand information about possible piracy incidents throughout the region.  This also reaffirms EU NAVFOR’s commitment to upholding maritime security in the area.

Friendly Approaches such as this help to build mutual trust and understanding between counter-piracy naval forces and the local Somali community. The seafarers thanked the Spanish boarding team and the EU NAVFOR for patrolling the area and safeguarding vessels from pirate attack.
