EU NAVFOR COOPERATION AND COLLABORATION WITH THE ROYAL NAVY OF OMAN

Apr 23, 2018 - 10:43
On 19th April, EU NAVFOR warship ITS Carlo Margottini conducted a training exercise with the patrol boat Al Najah of the Royal Navy of Oman following a logistic stop in Salalah, city of the Governorate of Dhofar in Oman.

The exercise, held in the waters outside of the port of Salalah, saw the two units working to increase interoperability in the field of tactical communications using light signals and also a series of manoeuvres to test and exercise the crews.

EU NAVFOR Force Commander, Rear Admiral Simone Malvagna, and the Commanding Officer of Italian Frigate Margottini, Commander Giuseppe Lai, were received by the Governor of Dhofar, H.E. Sayyid Mohammed bin Sultan Al Busaidi, the Assistant of the Commander of Dhofar Police, Colonel Aqeed Ali bin Adbullah bin Sadeeq and the Commander of Southern Naval Area, Captain Nasser bin Saif Al Shabibi. Regional problems relating to illegal activities in the Gulf of Aden were discussed and this was an excellent opportunity to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the EU's naval forces of Operation Atalanta and the Sultanate of Oman, one of the most committed and strong maritime partners in the region.

Since 2008, Operation Atalanta has been preventing piracy around the Horn of Africa and also ensuring protection for World Food Program ships and merchant vessels transiting through the Somali Basin. The mission also contributes to the surveillance of the Somalia Coast, collaborating and coordinating activity with regional and international maritime security forces. The training with the Royal Navy of Oman was an excellent opportunity to strengthen the international bonds of regional maritime security, and to ensure the freedom of navigation of maritime traffic.

The EU NAVFOR Italian Flagship Carlo Margottini has now resumed navigation towards the Somali waters where it will continue its mission of presence and surveillance to ensure an effective deterrence to acts of piracy.
