EU NAVFOR ON DUTY 24/7

Aug 02, 2018 - 14:26
EU NAVFOR has been conducting counter-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia since 2008. Advanced cooperation between our units and other maritime security organisations and departments, keeps the international maritime trade flowing through these important sea-lanes.

An important factor in maritime operations is the use of helicopter assets, these provide extensive capabilities to ships at sea. Onboard ESPS Meteoro, the multi-purpose Seahawk SH60B helicopter can conduct up to six hours of flight operations daily and regularly conducts night flying operations.

The helicopter provides the warship with the ability to conduct surveillance and reconnaissance operations of suspected pirate vessels, medical evacuation and boarding team insertion, as well as gunnery air support and ship-to-ship transfer of supplies

The Seahawk can travel up to 100nm from the host ship and remain on station for several hours. The helicopter carries out all-weather surveillance, search and rescue, missile targeting, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare and strike-warfare.

By using these assets, we can extend our mobility and reach as a force. As well as strategically moving personnel and providing medical assistance when required. EU NAVFOR continues to be an agile force, protecting vulnerable shipping in the waters of the Indian Ocean.
