The successful delivery of counter-piracy operations requires commitment, dedication and a will to succeed. EU NAVFOR personnel have continued to show these characteristics since 2008 which has led to the effective deterrence and repression of piracy off the Somali Coast.

Recognising the commitment of personnel is important, and on Saturday 7th July several personnel onboard EU NAVFOR warship ITS Carlo Margottini were awarded the European Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) Service Medal for their admirable contribution to Operation Atalanta’s counter-piracy efforts.

Within the Force Headquarters on board ITS Carlo Margottini a team consisting of the Chief Of Staff, Captain Enrique Pomares, Commander Javier Ruiz, and Lieutenant Simone Catania received their medals from the Force Commander, Rear Admiral Simone Malvagna.

He said: “I want to congratulate you for having contributed to improving security in the area and for having achieved the work that has been recognised, not only by the Spanish authorities, but by the whole of the European Union and the international community.  This distinctive medal will be a reminder of your passage through this mission, with its difficulties, your sacrifices, and the joys that have come with it.”

Personnel are continually recognised throughout their tenure on the Operation to show how they have truly contributed to the mission’s aim of strengthening maritime security in this wide and strategically significant sea area.
