EU NAVFOR Thanks Italian Warship ITS Carabiniere for Support to Operation Atalanta During Journey Home Through Gulf of Aden from Far East Deployment

As she sailed home through the waters of the Gulf of Aden from her 27,895 nautical-mile deployment from Italy to South East Asia and Australia, Italian Navy warship, ITS Carabiniere, took time to contribute to EU NAVFOR’s counter-piracy patrols along the Somali coastline.

This successful cooperation between EU NAVFOR and EU Member States’ navies as they transit through what are still deemed to be piracy risk areas for merchant shipping, has made a significant contribution to the deterrence and disruption of Somali-based pirate attacks.

This is not the first time that ITS Carabiniere has contributed to Operation Atalanta as she was EU NAVFOR’s flagship during 2015 and 2016.

ITS Carabiniere is the fourth of ten Bergamini-class frigates ordered by the Italian Navy. Launched on 29 March 2014, she was commissioned into service on 28 April 2015.

Commanded by Commander Francesco Pagnotta, she sailed from her home port of La Spezia in northern Italy on 20 December 2016 to commence her Far East deployment.
