EU NAVFOR warship assists Yemeni dhow

On the morning of the 20th April the helicopter from the German frigate NIEDERSACHSEN discovered a Yemeni Dhow with complete engine failure. It was adrift 54 nautical miles (100km) South East of the Yemeni coast. The crew of the dhow waved their arms to attract the attention of the helicopter.

At this time NIEDERSACHSEN was 48 nautical miles (89km) south-westerly of the dhow, patrolling the IRTC - International Recommended Transit Corridor. Instantly, Niedersachsen changed course towards the vessel in order to assist her.

The engineering team of NIEDERSACHSEN went on board the Yemeni dhow and were able to repair the vessel. On completion the dhow continued on her journey having been provided with food and water.

EUNAVFOR Somalia – Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Program (WFP) and vessels of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). EUNAVFOR also protects vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, deters and disrupts piracy. EUNAVFOR finally monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
