On 8 December, the EUNAVFOR Spanish warship SPS INFANTA CRISTINA completed operating under EUNAVFOR, after four months working on Operation ATALANTA.

During her time in the Operation, SPS INFANTA CRISTINA escorted three vessels chartered by the World Food Program (WFP), assisting the delivery of 9,558 metric tons of food to Somalia. She also escorted two logistic vessels chartered by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), thereby supporting the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia.

In addition, on 13 November, SPS INFANTA CRISTINA disrupted a whaler with four suspected pirates onboard, hampering a pirate action and avoiding a highly probable attack on a vulnerable vessel.

Finally, on 6 December, she provided assistance to Yemeni fishermen whose dhow was drifting in the Gulf of Aden.

EUNAVFOR Somalia – Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Program (WFP) and vessels of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). EUNAVFOR also protects vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, deters and disrupts piracy. EUNAVFOR finally monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
