During Italian warship ITS San Giusto’s port visit to Djibouti on 21 August 2012, the Force Commander of the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR), Rear Admiral Enrico Credendino, had a busy agenda.
Rear Admiral Credendino welcomed onboard Captain Liang Yeng who is the Commander of the Chinese warship Zhang Zhou, currently deployed in the Gulf of Aden to escort and protect the national merchant shipping from piracy.
Rear Admiral Credendino also welcomed on board Mrs Anne Petot, who is the European Union political advisor based in Djibouti. As part of the visit they discussed the launch of the EU mission Cap-Nestor, which aims to enhance the maritime capacities of countries in the Horn of Africa and the Western Indian Ocean.
Speaking about the launch Rear Admiral Credendino said "EU CAP Nestor is a key factor in the EU’s comprehensive approach to Somalia and in the fight against piracy in the Gulf of Aden and in the Indian Ocean. The concomitant presence of Operation Atalanta and EUCAP-Nestor, both launched by European Union, is a demonstration of the commitment to Counter-Piracy."
Rear Admiral Credendino also met the head of the Djibouti Port Authority - Mr Mohammad Moussa Abar, the Chief of the Support Element for Atalanta (SEA) - Commander Bernard Baron, and Lt Col Wais O. Bogoreh who is the Commandant of the Djibouti Coast Guard, with whom he discussed the EU NAVFOR training programme with the Djiboutian Navy and Coast Guard during the next port visit, scheduled for October.
