During her recent port visit to Muscat, Oman, EU Naval Force warship, FGS Bayern, hosted passengers and crew from cruise liner, MS Europa, that was berthed close to her at the pier.
The security situation off the Horn of Africa was a concern for the passengers and their visit to the German Navy frigate was an opportunity to inform them of what EU Naval Force is doing to counter the threat from piracy.
Speaking during the visit, the Master of MS Europa, Mark Behrend, stated: "Our invitation to visit FGS Bayern during our trip was a very special one. Images and events that are otherwise only seen on a TV or cinema screen were suddenly very close. On behalf of all the passengers I want to thank you for your hard work that makes our lives seem so effortless, secure and carefree."
The presence of EU Naval Force warships and maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft has helped to deter and disrupt piracy, with the number of attacks reducing significantly since 2012. However, it is widely recognised that piracy is not yet defeated, so counter-piracy forces and merchant shipping are remaining vigilant in the piracy high risk area.
The Commanding Officer of FGS Bayern, Commander Fähnrich, said: "Meetings such as this are an ideal opportunity to promote mutual understanding and to promote our tasks and capabilities. We were able to show that we are making a major contribution to protecting the sea routes."
