The EU NAVFOR Montenegrin maritime protection team that is currently aboard the World Food Programme vessel, MV Esbjerg, has been busy this week carrying out training at sea to ensure that they remain fully prepared to deal with any incident.

MV Esbjerg is carrying much-needed cargo for the World Food Programme (WFP)  Somalia team and once it arrives safely in port, it will be distributed by the WFP to the Somali people.

EU NAVFOR warships and maritime protection teams have been protecting WFP vessels since December 2008 and since that time over 1,3 million tonnes of food aid has arrived safely in port.

As well as providing security for the vessel, the Montenegrin team also provides advice to the master and crew about self-protection measures to counter a pirate attack.

Speaking about their three-month deployment, the commanding officer of the Montenegrin team, Lieutenant Commander Zoran Samardzic, stated “My team and I are very proud to be protecting, as part of EU NAVFOR, this valuable humanitarian aid cargo that is destined for the Somali people.”
