PUNTLAND MARITIME EXERCISES WITH EU NAVFOR

Nov 23, 2018 - 12:40
EU NAVFOR have returned to Bosasso to conduct joint exercises with the Bosasso Port Maritime Police Unit (BPMPU).

The provision of specialist maritime knowledge can facilitate growth in these forces and allow us to cooperate more closely. This exchange of skills and experience with key personnel will help further generations of maritime recruits.

We have worked closely on projects like this with our sister mission EU Cap Somalia for some time; which works to enhance the capabilities and skill sets within the country. Force Commander, Rear Admiral Alfonso Perez De Nanclares, met with Colonel Hashi from the BPMPU to discuss the ongoing progression in Puntland and the help that the EU can provide.

Here they had the opportunity to discuss what is needed for them to operate as a capable maritime force. The BPMPU received first aid and firefighting masterclasses in order to prepare them for emergencies.

By working closely with our sister missions and regional actors, we aim to build prosperity and allow the opportunity for young people to flourish in ethical career paths such as the BPMPU, thus hugely reducing the temptation for people living in Somalia to resort to piracy and other careers based on criminal activities.
