On 10 September, ATALANTA was reported about the hijack of the Merchant Vessel GLAMOR with St Vincent and Grenadines flag. The Pirate Action Group (PAG) was composed by six people and the incident took place 38 Nautical Miles Southwest of Balhaf, Yemen.
Prior to the boarding, the crewmembers of the MV GLAMOR managed to stop the vessel and shut down all the systems, proceeded immediately to the citadel as a precautionary security measure.
ATALANTA redirected its assets in the area towards the location where the incident had taken place. Furthermore, in coordination with the Combined Maritime Force, the Japanese reconnaissance aircraft, carried out show-of-force flights over the merchant vessel. The evidence that international forces were heading towards the area caused the pirates to abandon the vessel.
ATALANTA Maritime Security Centre – Indian Ocean (MSCIO) issued the relevant alerts containing the necessary information to enable all vessels transiting the area to take the appropriate security measures, in accordance with Best Management Practices.
Later during the day, updated information from the Company Security Officer regarding the incident confirmed that the situation has been resolved, and all crew members are reported safe and well.
This makes the seventh piracy case since April 2026 with five of them already active with 87 crewmembers’ captive.
Since the first piracy incident took place, ATALANTA’s Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean issued multiple warning alerts to all vessels sailing in the vicinity to maintain heightened vigilance, adhere to Best Management Practices – Maritime Security, and report immediately any suspicious activity or relevant information to MSCIO and UKMTO.
ATALANTA has reaffirmed its role as a key maritime security actor in the Western Indian Ocean since 2008. By deterring piracy and protecting vital shipping routes, the Operation helps ensure the safe delivery of goods.
