The Seychelles: a key partner in maritime security

Developing partnerships with key nations in the area of operations ensures a clear focus on maintaining maritime security; this also allows us to share vital information and resources across a vast operational area.

On September 18, 2018, ITS Federico Martinengo (an Italian FREMM Class Frigate) met up with the Seychelles Air Force just south of Mahe Island. The objective of the meeting was to develop new cooperation and capabilities between EU NAVFOR and local military forces.

The Seychelles Air Force fly the Dornier 228, a maritime patrol aircraft with long reach and surveillance capability. The aircraft can monitor and act as a deterrent to criminals at sea, as well as assist merchant vessels during potential acts of piracy or armed robbery.

Commander Andrea Quanodamatteo, the Commanding Officer of ITS Federico Martinengo, visited Lieutenant Colonel Michael Pouponneau at the SAF airbase in Mahe. Here they discussed further interactions and planned an exercise where the Dornier would provide logistic support to the ship at sea.

The SAF works closely with their national coastguard during interdiction operations and for Combined Maritime Force taskings, this makes them a key stakeholder in maritime protection in the area, as well as acting as an effective deterrent to piracy.
