On 19 November, SPS GALICIA completed her last day of operations, as a part of EU NAVFOR, Operation ATALANTA Task Force, after 82 days of counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden and Somali Basin.
EU NAVFOR Force Commander, Rear-Admiral Philippe Coindreau, expressed his deep satisfaction to the warship and her crew, for their outstanding contribution to the EU NAVFOR mission.SPS GALICIA is a Landing Platform Dock (LPD) ship, which has conducted a variety of task during its deployment. The operational flexibility of GALICIA has provided multi-purposes options to the EU NAVFOR mission.
In his farewell message, the Force Commander emphasised the “high fighting spirit of Galicia” and the “continuous dedication of the crew to fight piracy”. The Spanish SPS Galicia is under the command of Captain Juan Ruiz Casas. The warship has approximately 244 crew members and served as an EU NAVFOR unit since 31 August.
EU NAVFOR Somalia – Operation ATALANTA’s main tasks are to escort merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Programme (WFP) and vessels of African Union Mission in Somalia, AMISOM and to protect vulnerable vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean and to deter and disrupt piracy. EU NAVFOR also monitors fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
