During the third port visit of the EU NAVFOR French Flagship FS DE GRASSE to Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, EU NAVFOR Force Commander, Rear-Admiral Philippe Coindreau, seized the opportunity to meet with national authorities and regional partners.
The Chief of the Tanzanian Navy expressed his concerns about piracy and his will to develop counter-piracy co-operation between Tanzania and EU NAVFOR. Senior Staff on board FS DE GRASSE used this opportunity to give technical advice to the Tanzanian Navy in the use of the “Mercury” network; Mercury being a real time information platform between military actors in the area.
EU NAVFOR Force Commander also met the Tanzanian Deputy Attorney General, Mr. George Masaju, with the EU Delegation Representative, Ambassador Tim Clarke, and the French Ambassador, Mr. Jacques de Labriolle. This valuable meeting discussed issues concerning prosecution of pirates and means to better support regional initiatives.
Local partners and diplomats in Tanzania have all declared being deeply concerned by piracy and praised EU NAVFOR for its action and efficiency.
On 1st October 2010, Eric van der Linden, EU Head of Delegation stated that "while EUNAVFOR and other naval forces continue to deter and interrupt piracy at the high seas, countries in the region should also take their responsibility to secure the East African coast".
Nine days later, during Mr. Jack Lang’s visit on board the EU NAVFOR Flagship FS DE GRASSE, the Force Commander insisted: “The European Union has already some transfer agreements and negotiations are still ongoing for similar agreements with other partners in the region, but it is of utmost importance to find a lasting solution for the judicial treatment of piracy, as High Representative Catherine Ashton reminded it on 7 October in Mauritius”.
