On Thursday 3 December 2015, German warship, FGS Erfurt, completed the successful escort of World Food Programme (WFP) vessel, MV Eleni K, across the Gulf of Aden.
FGS Erfurt escorted the WFP vessel from Berbera to the port of Aden in Yemen, providing protection from any potential pirate attack during the 140 nautical mile journey.
Since 2009, Operation Atalanta has protected over 335 WFP vessels as they delivered over one million tonnes of humanitarian aid destined for the Somali people.
Speaking about the protection, FGS Erfurt’s commanding officer, Commander Schmidt, said “The protection that we gave to MV Eleni K means that much-needed aid will now be delivered to the people of Yemen. Providing reassurance to the WFP vessels transporting humanitarian aid is a primary task for EU Naval Force.”
