On 7th and 8th November 2017, the Force Commander for EU NAVFOR Operation Atalanta, Rear Admiral Fabio Gregori, met the current commander of the European Union Training Mission (EUTM) Brigadier General Pietro Addis (Italian Army) in Mogadishu, Somalia.
This key leadership engagement was also attended by Maria Cristina Stepanescu, Head of Mission, EU CAP Somalia, a civilian mission which assists host countries develop self-sustaining capacity for enhancement of maritime security. The meetings took place on aboard ITS Fasan, the current flagship of EU NAVFOR, and ashore in training areas near Mogadishu.
The European Union launched the EUTM in April 2010 in order to contribute to strengthening the government and institutions of Somalia. In so doing, it forms part of the EU's comprehensive engagement in Somalia, which aims to support stabilising the country and to respond to the needs of the Somali people.
