International relationships between EU contributing nations are essential to the continued protection of vulnerable shipping transiting high risk areas.

The Montengrin ‘Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment’ (AVPD) are supporting EU NAVFOR Somalia to fulfill its counter-piracy mission by protecting ships of the World Food Programme when they deliver vital food aid to the people of Somalia.

EU NAVFOR’s Force Commander, Rear Admiral Simone Malvagna visited the members of the Montenegrin team currently embarked on board World Food Progamme Vessel Petra 2 as she left Djibouti. He was able to see how they had integrated themselves into the ships crew and become part of the team effort to protect the World Food Programme. An immediate example of this was seen with the Montengrin medics providing assistance to a member of Petra 2’s crew receiving assistance to a minor injury.

The provision of an embarked AVPD has ensured over 1.7million tonnes of food aid has reached the people of Somalia without delay or disruption. By continuing to send troops to participate in Operation Atalanta, Montenegro is contributing to continued success of this counter-piracy mission.
