Dear reader,
September has been a busy month, with a multitude of activities taking place both in the Area of Operations and at Headquarters. Thanks to the commitment of the multinational forces and international partners, as well as the regional and local forces of the countries in the region, piracy continues to be contained.
At the strategic level, the signing of the working arrangement with European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) represents a new milestone for the Operation. The document establishes a framework for cooperation, in particular through the exchange of information. This agreement enables ATALANTA to be prepared to provide support and assistance to Europol in an effective and direct way, within the means and capabilities of the Operation.
The visits by European Union Head of Missions aboard our flagship this month were also highly significant. Of particular note is the event held in Salalah, Oman, where ambassadors from EU Member States to Oman and Omani representatives met aboard our flagship. These visits and events demonstrate the role of ATALANTA in supporting EU diplomacy in the region, facilitating and promoting its development and success.
On the operational side, a visit of the flagship to Seychelles capital Victoria was paid, a key partner for the Operation, and a crucial logistics hub for our activities. Here we carried out multiple activities with the armed forces, and held meetings with military representatives that strengthened ties with the Operation. In addition, during the port visit, an inter-action with the First Training Squadron from the Indian Navy took place.
In addition, a capacity-building exercise, in support of EUCAP-Somalia, was also conducted with the Somali Police’ Coast Guard Department.
