The German Navy flight operator reached his 3,000 hours during an operational flight with the EU Naval Force counter-piracy mission, Operation Atalanta. Personnel from the Tanzanian Police and Navy were trained in two subjects as part of a Local Maritime Capacity Building (LMCB) programme coordinated by EUCAP Nestor. Firstly two hours of practical first aid training was delivered by the medical staff from the FGS Brandenburg. The attendees were trained how to treat fractures and to take care of unconscious patients. This was followed by two hours of briefings and practical training on handling of evidence at a maritime crime scene, delivered by the on-board detachment of German military police. EU NAVFOR Force Commander, Rear Admiral Jürgen zur Mühlen, underlined in his statement: “LMCB’s are an important measure to strengthen local capabilities and by this, support regional capacity building within the EU comprehensive approach.” The training was focused on medical procedures, included briefing and practical demonstrations on how to treat burns, fractures and severe bleeding. After receiving medical treatment, the mariner’s condition quickly stabilised, so FS Floréal headed towards Salalah, Jumme Trader’s next port of call, and the helicopter carried out an evacuation to Sultan Qaboos hospital the following morning The sailor of MV Jumme Trader is treated in FS Floréal’s well-equipped sickbay. After assessing the patient, the decision was taken to evacuate the sailor without delay to FS Floréal’s for further medical care. The FS Floreal's Panther helicopter was launched and on arrival on scene, the doctor was winched on to the merchant vessel MV Jumme Trader. The medical officers diagnosed the master of the dhow with febrile food poisening and immediately treated him. All four fishermen were unhurt, but very grateful for the assistance. After two hours of repair work by the engineers from the Floréal, the crew were able to sail towards their home port. Floréal assisted four Seychelles fishermen who were stopped in the water having suffered an engine failure FS Floreal was just a few hours from the Seychelles when she saw the small vessel. The frigate immediately dispatched its sea boat with an engineering team and the ship’s doctor embarked.
